SUMMER TIME IS TRAVEL TIME

Make a Map
Most people are familiar with a road map, or a map of your country. Hotel rooms and classrooms have a diagram of the escape route in case of a fire. That is a map too. There is probably a map of the water and sewer pipes running underground in your town. Maps are two dimensional representations of three dimensional space.
You can map things as simple as your neighborhood, or as complex as the universe.
What would a map of your brain look like?
Can you map the inside of the refrigerator?
Map the way to get to the library from home.
Did you ever wish you had a treasure map? You can make a treasure map for a friend. What kind of treasure will you have for him to find?

Mapping Penny’s World Lisa’s class is learning to make maps. She and her dog, Penny set out to explore in this introduction to maps.

POSTCARDS
This year why not make your own postcards to send to your friends? You can buy blank postcards at the post office or use card stock cut int 4” x 6” rectangles. Sketch a picture of something you saw or experienced on your trip. You might draw the wild strawberries you tasted or the delicious food you tried. Perhaps you remember the clouds over the mountains or the wind off the ocean. Maybe you played with your dog in the sprinkler this summer. Any memory makes a great postcard to send or to keep.
Send a postcard to yourself too!

You might draw a pretty scene, historic building, an interesting animal, or plant.

SPUD, Statue Maker, and Ghost In The Graveyard,
Do you know what these games are?
Have you forgotten how to play?
These and other childhood games are great fun for children of all ages. There are plenty of books in the library that describe playground games with rules and instructions. These games don't require lots of equipment or adult supervision. So get outside and play. Adults, teach the neighborhood children how to play. Kids, ask the old people how to play. Then go outside and play!
